How to Care For Your New Custom Candle
You just made your perfectly crafted candle at Sense by the Falls. Don’t you want it to last a while? Of course, you do because you took your time to pick the perfect scent combination and container! Here are some tips on how to take care of your new candle:
The First Burn is the Deepest
The first burn of your new candle is the most important because this is make or break for the longevity of your candle and its lasting scent. If you didn’t know, candles have memory! What this means is that after you burn your candle for the first time, anytime after this, it will only burn up to the point of that first burn. This is how tunneling occurs. Tunneling is when the candle is not burned to the edges of its container and forms a tunnel in the wax. Tunneling leads to wasting wax and decreasing the lifespan of your candle. Be sure to let your candle burn all the way to the edges the first time your burn it to avoid tunneling. This should take 2-4 hours depending on the size of the candle.
Trim That Wick!
The next tip is to always trim the wick of your candle! Trimming the wick of your candle is important because it will help control the height of the flame. The reason you want a short flame is this will protect you, your home, and your belongings from a fire! A short flame also allows the candle to burn slower in turn allowing the candle to last longer. When wicks are not trimmed, they will begin to mushroom and significantly negatively impact the longevity of your candle. The ideal length of your wick should be the width of your fingernail!
Don’t Blow Out Your Candle
When you play out your candle, you could make the wax uneven and create tunneling which we already discussed should be avoided at all costs. This could also cause the wax to cover the wick which makes it extremely hard to light again. If you want your candles to last longer and smell the best, invest in a snuffer to prevent this!
